3 Tips To Prepare Your Heater For Cold Weather

Our days are still pretty sunny and mild but the instant the sun sets in the evening it is a good reminder that the cold weather is coming. It’s something of a whiplash going from weather that is best for shorts to temperatures that require a really good warm sweater. Thankfully, if you are home, you shouldn’t have to worry about staying comfortable when the temperature changes suddenly because you have a heater to rely on.

That said, let’s take a moment to make sure you really can rely on that heater. If you are just turning on your heating system for the first time this week, then we want to help ensure your system is up to the task. Here are three ways you can help your heater have a good start to the coming months when it will be used the most.

Tip #1: Check your heater’s air filter.

We suggest that everyone check their system’s air filter on a regular basis. This is because a clogged air filter is going to cause problems for the effectiveness and efficiency of your heater in the coming months. A new air filter will keep the air entering your system clean but strong.

If you haven’t changed your air filter in a few months, it is worth it to change yours out now. On average, you should change your filter every one to three months.

Tip #2: Check your vents or air handlers.

Before you start running your heating system, whether it is a central heater like a furnace or a heat pump system, you should make sure that the exits for the air the system will create is clear.

If you have vents around your home, check to make sure they are all open, wiped down and clear of dust, and won’t have anything blocking the air they produce. Likewise, make sure to check any air handlers to make sure there is nothing blocking them that would hinder airflow.

Doing this pre-use check ensures that the hot air that your system produces gets exactly where it needs to go.

Tip #3: Schedule maintenance for your heater.

One of the best things that you can do to help prepare your heating system is to schedule heater maintenance in Farmington, NM. This service gives your technician a chance to check out every aspect of your heater to catch and address minor issues before they worsen. Maintenance improves efficiency and performance while reducing the risk of repair needs for the season.
