Understanding Evaporative Coolers

There are a few different air conditioner options out there. The one that people tend to overlook sometimes though is the evaporative or swamp cooler in Farmington, NM. These are cooling systems that operate a bit differently than the refrigerant-based units that seem to have become the standard in the market. Why? Because evaporative coolers don’t use refrigerant.

An evaporative cooler offers an effective method to cool your home that also happens to be somewhat environmentally friendly. If you are considering a switch, read on to learn more about evaporative air conditioners to see if this may be the right choice for your home.

How an Evaporative Cooler Operates

If you aren’t familiar with evaporative coolers just yet, we’ll give you a small overview of these systems so you know what makes them different.

Rather than using refrigerant to absorb heat and cool the air, evaporative coolers help cool the air through the evaporation of water. The system fan draws air into the system and passes it over water-saturated pads in order to cool it down. This helps to cool the air in the house and does so while using less energy and substances than a central refrigerant-based air conditioner or even a heat pump might.

The Benefits of an Evaporative System

The use of an evaporative cooler to provide climate control for almost any modern New Mexico home can be beneficial. Here’s how:

  • They save energy: Evaporative coolers are able to provide effective home cooling for around 1/8th of the cost that it would take to run a refrigerant-based system.
  • They can balance indoor air quality: When you use an evaporative cooler it can help to combat the discomfort caused by dry air. While excessive humidity is harmful to home comfort, dry air is also problematic. thankfully, an evaporative cooler can help cool your home off and provide some much-needed moisture.
  • They are more environmentally friendly: because an evaporative cooling system just uses water to cool the home, it isn’t going to harm the environment. Unfortunately, refrigerant is less than great for the environment even though more recent forms of it have been made to be less harmful.

Is It Right For You?

An evaporative or swamp cooler can be the right choice for some homes in our area but this system isn’t for everyone. You may want to invest in a swamp cooler if you are looking for better humidity balance in your home and lower cooling costs. If you still aren’t sure about this system though, you can talk to one of our technicians about your options.

Of course, if you change your mind and end up wanting to switch from an evaporative cooler to a refrigerant-based system, we can help with that too. We can install any kind of air conditioner into your home and we can retrofit systems as well.
