Faulty Furnace? What You Should Know before Calling a Technician

A broken furnace is a frustrating occurrence, and you want to get it repaired as soon as you possibly can. However, attempting to fix a furnace on your own can result in even more problems that you started with. You should leave the major repairs to a qualified technician, but we do recommend that you check the following before you call.

Check the circuit breaker

If your furnace will not turn on at all, it could be that something in the area has tripped a circuit breaker. Try resetting the circuit breaker. If this happens more than one, you may need to call a technician to check out any potential problems with your heating system or with your electrical wiring.

Is it the thermostat?

Many people initially suspect that the thermostat is the culprit. If your furnace is not turning on, it could be that the thermostat needs batteries, or that it accidentally switched over into cooling mode. You should also know that it can take several seconds or to turn on, because the fan will not turn on until after the system heats up to a certain temperature.

Try changing the filter

Many people are surprised to find out that a dirty air filter can actually cause a lot of trouble for the furnace. A clogged filter prevents air from coming into the system, and this could be a contributor to a malfunctioning furnace. Make sure that you change yours every month.

Call a Technician

The fact of the matter is that most furnace problems require the help of a trained technician who can repair the system correctly the first time around. Choosing an inexperienced handyman to repair your furnace, or attempting to do it on your own, can cause even more problems for your heating system, resulting in more costly repairs.
