What Types of Air Purifiers Are out There?

family-timeDoes the air in your home smell stale? Does it smell outright bad? Are you concerned about increasingly aggravated allergy or asthma symptoms among residents in your home? If so, it sounds like it is probably time for you to start using an air purifier in Aztec, NM. Sounds simple enough,  right? Well,  once you start doing a bit of your own preliminary research,  you may start to realize that there is more to the equation than meets the eye!

What we mean is that there are a lot of different types of air cleaners and air purifiers out there. Finding the perfect one, or ones,  for your unique situation can be tricky. You certainly don’t want to be wasting your money on systems that are not going to successfully do the job that needs doing,  right? Today,  we’re going to give you a brief rundown of some systems to consider. Feel free to reach out with any questions that you may have.

First Things First: Filtration vs. Purification

There is a big difference between air filtration and air purification. While both serve the same ultimate end goal, that being to clean up the air in your home, they go about doing so in different ways.

An air filter takes a decidedly passive approach to the matter. It is installed in the HVAC system, and the filter media traps pollutants that are in the air as that air passes through the filter. Air cleaners and air purifiers, on the other hand, are more active in their approach.

Electronic Air Cleaners Are a Great Place to Start

An electronic air cleaner is where you’ll want to look if you want to remove particulate from the air in your home but your air filter just does not seem to be cutting it. Such systems can vary a bit in their operation, but most will use an ionization process to charge pollutants that are in the air.

Those charged pollutants are then collected on oppositely charged cells or plates in the system. As you may recall from a science class in your past, opposites attract.  The pollutants are trapped on the collector cells/plates, and those are simply removed, cleaned, and put back into place by the homeowner.

What About Biological Pollutants?

Not all pollutants that you’ll want to remove from the air can just be filtered out or trapped on such plates, though. Biological pollutants, including viruses, mold, and bacteria, need to be destroyed. That way, you don’t have to worry about them continuing to reproduce even after they’ve been trapped. And that is precisely what a UV air purifier can do.

Some of the best products on the market, such as the APCO Whole-House Purifier, combine filtration options such as activated charcoal filters with UV-C lights that excel in both filtering and cleaning the air. If that’s the type of performance you’re after, we’re the pros to call.
