heating-burners

Your heat pump is the most important component in your home when it comes to staying warm in the winter. When your heat pump is working well you probably don’t think about it much…but what about when you begin noticing signs that something is going wrong? Heat pump damage doesn’t manifest overnight without any warning signs, first.

It’s common for something small to go wrong and spread through your heat pump until the entire system stops working. That’s why it’s so important to address repair needs before your heat pump stops working completely. If you think you need heat pump repair in Farmington this season, we can help. Just give us a call at the first sign that something is wrong so we can fix it before the damage worsens. If you’re not sure how to tell when something is wrong with your heat pump, keep reading.

Auxiliary Heat Stays On

Your heat pump has an indicator that says “Aux Heat” on the thermostat. This indicator signals that the electric heaters in your air handler are turned on. It’s normal to see the “Aux Heat” indicator when your heat pump is working to warm your house. But if you see the indicator staying on around the clock, something is wrong. You need an expert to check your heat pump and make sure everything is working properly.

Ice On the Coil Outside

Your heat pump has to work hard in the winter, and naturally, it’s cold outside when your unit is turned on. When you see ice accumulating on the outdoor coil, don’t be alarmed. The ice becomes a problem occurs when it doesn’t thaw out and instead continues to get thicker. If you think that ice has been on your coil for too long, take a closer look. Is the ice restricting any components? Ice can block airflow to and from your heat pump, making it difficult for the unit to heat your home effectively.

Restricted Airflow

When your heat pump is on, you should be able to hold your hand up and feel a stream of warm air. If you can’t feel any airflow or the airflow you do feel is lukewarm or cool, you may need heat pump repairs. Your heat pump heats your home by moving warm air into the space. When you have restricted airflow, there are blockages somewhere inside your heat pump. Airflow restrictions mean that your heat pump has to work harder to deliver heat to your home.

Loud or Unusual Noises

It’s common to hear clicking as your heat pump turns on or off. You may even hear unusual sounds once in a while. But if these sounds become persistent or get louder over time, something is wrong. Ignoring these sounds can mean more damage to your heat pump as the problem persists without being fixed.
