You May Not Know about These Options for Purchasing a New AC

Looking into buying a new air conditioner, but not sure where to start? The best place to start is with a phone call to your local AC and heating technicians. But as a primer, we’ve detailed a few things homeowners are often surprised to hear about new AC installation.

You can retrofit a central AC system to replace your evaporative cooler

You’re not stuck with that evaporative cooler forever. Somedays, an evaporative cooler is an efficient and effective option for our climate. Other times, it’s too humid for it to work effectively at all. You can still retrofit a traditional central AC system into your home, and a high-efficiency unit won’t cost too much to run.

You can get central air even without air ducts

You can get energy efficient cooling and heating with a ductless mini split system. (We recommend Fujitsu.) Ductless mini split systems don’t need any air ducts because blower fans are mounted on the wall and they all link to an outside condenser/compressor unit. This has the same power and efficiency as many standard high-efficiency central AC systems and can be used to cool several rooms in your home.

Buying an efficient unit saves you money over time

Most high-efficiency air conditioning units offset the higher initial cost of installation in a matter of a few short years. In New Mexico, homeowners can save dozens or even hundreds of dollars per year by choosing a high-efficiency AC system rather than a standard less expensive unit. Look for systems with the following features to save money without sacrificing comfort:

  • The ENERGY STAR seal
  • A SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) of higher than 15
  • Variable speed settings for improved comfort and efficiency
