Troublesome Air Conditioner Noises

noisy-systemOn those days when the sky is clear and the sun is heating things up quite thoroughly it is nice to know that you have the option to just stay inside and enjoy the nice, even, crisp, cool air that your air conditioner is providing. That is, it is nice until you become aware of the fact that there is a fairly worrying noise coming from your system while it is doing its job.

While some air conditioners are going to make a little bit of noise when they operate (ie. a brief amount of clicking after a cooling cycle ends), this doesn’t mean that every noise coming from your unit should be written off. In fact, most sounds should prompt you to be concerned because in many cases they are going to be an indicator of trouble.

With that said, let’s review some of the noises your air conditioner may produce and what issues those noise may indicate.

What Those Troubling AC Sounds Mean

Below we’ve provided a small list of concerning noises that might be coming from your AC system and what these noises could be telling you. With this information in hand, it hopefully makes things easier when you have to decide if and when you need to call for air conditioner repairs in La Plata.

  • Screaming or screeching: An air conditioner that sounds like it is angry is one that needs to be repaired. Screaming or screeching may be due to
  • Hissing: Hissing can indicate more that one issue. In some cases, a hissing sound can be created by air leaks in your ductwork. In another instance, it may be due a clogged filter restricting airflow. Another cause could be from a refrigerant leak. In any case, hissing isn’t a normal noise for your cooling system to make and shouldn’t be ignored.
  • Rattling: If it sounds like there is something being shaken up inside of your air conditioner, you may want t shut it off and reach out for repairs before it sustains too much damage. Rattling is usually going to be caused by something loose inside your system getting kicked around.
  • Humming or buzzing: If you notice humming or buzzing noises coming from your air conditioner, this could be from more than one source. One cause could be due to electrical components that are malfunctioning while another could be a dirty evaporator coil or a clogged filter.

These are just some of the sounds that could be coming from your air conditioner. If a replaceable-filter change doesn’t address the issue, it is likely that you will need the help of a professional to get the job done.
