Top 5 Heatwave Tips for Farmington

We know it goes without saying, but this summer has been particularly hot for our area of New Mexico. If you’re trying to survive recent heat waves and stay comfortable without spending too much on your monthly energy bill, we have some tips that can help.

And if you begin to have problems with your air conditioner, you can give our team a call for air conditioning repair in Farmington, NM. We’re always here to help! In the meantime, you can keep reading to learn more about how to stay cool even with extremely high temperatures outside.

Set Your Thermostat

Realistically, your air conditioner can only cool your home about 20° lower than the outdoor temperature. On days when it is particularly hot outside, you need to increase the setting on your thermostat so that your air conditioner is not working as hard.

This may seem counterproductive to trying to stay cool, but your air conditioner can only do so much. Keeping a much lower setting is only straining your system without producing the cooling results that you expect. When you increase the temperature to a more reasonable expectation, you allow your air conditioner to cool your home more effectively.

Believe it or not, you will get better results. When the heat wave passes, you can always set your thermostat back to a lower setting. And of course, you do want to keep in mind that the US Department of Energy recommends that you set your air conditioner no lower than 70° for cooling on any given day of the summer.

Use Fans

One great way to stay cool on these hottest days of summer is to utilize fans around your home. If you have ceiling fans already installed, you can turn them on. If not, you can buy box fans at your local hardware store and utilize those. Feeling airflow can actually make you feel cooler without lowering the temperature in your home.

Keep Up with Maintenance

Even when you increase the temperature on your thermostat and use fans, your air conditioner is still working extra hard on the hottest days of summer. Because of this, it is under more strain and taking on more wear and tear.

Hotter summers mean that AC maintenance is more important than ever. You want to be sure to keep up with your homeowner maintenance each month, as well as scheduling professional maintenance with our team of experts.

Watch for Problems

And in between service appointments, you can pay attention to the signs that something is wrong with your air conditioner. Identifying problems early and addressing them before they have a chance to worsen is one of the best ways you can take care of your air conditioner.

If you notice any unusual sounds or changes in how your air conditioner operates during and in between the cooling cycles, give our team a call. Even if you can’t pinpoint anything that is particularly wrong and you just have a gut feeling, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
