When you need a new heating and air conditioning system, take the time to do some research first. You’ll have these systems for the next 10-20 years, with excellent care and maintenance, and you want it to be something that will keep you comfortable and save you money. A heat pump may be just the system for your home.
Heating systems and cooling systems are usually two completely separate units. They may have been installed at the same time. They are likely controlled with the same thermostat. They could even use the same fan to suck in air and move it throughout your home. However, the standard setup still consists of two different units: the furnace and the air conditioner.
Swamp coolers, also called evaporative coolers, have long been a popular choice for AC systems in homes in New Mexico.
In our area, the dry climate means that, for most of the year, water can evaporate into the air with ease. And that’s how your swamp cooler works—evaporation. Air blows over a damp pad, and warm dry air becomes cool moist air as the water evaporates into the air.
A lot of local residents are hesitant to replace their evaporative coolers with central air conditioning systems. Evaporative coolers, in place of refrigeration systems, have been common in New Mexico for a long time. In some regions, evaporative coolers just don’t make sense. Where there is excessive moisture in the air, it simply cannot work efficiently. But in dry climates, it may work just fine—sometimes.
In the winter, your air conditioner is the last thing on your mind. But in the spring, as summer approaches and temperatures finally start to go up, you look forward to the days that you’ll want to turn your air conditioner on after you enjoy a beautiful day outside in the sun.
Your furnace is not working properly, and you’ve finally accepted that you might need a new one by the start of the next heating season. But this doesn’t mean you should wait until heating season comes around. Delaying system replacement may actually be more trouble than it’s worth. If your old heating system is reaching the end of its life, we recommend replacement ASAP, even if the weather is mild.
When you’re in need of heating service, your first concern may be the cost. A lot of people call around from contractor to contractor looking for the lowest cost for a heating installation or service. But this simply is not the way to do it when you want to save money, especially since you may pay more on monthly heating costs and future repairs if you allow someone with little or no experience to service your heater.
