Do You Need a New Thermostat?

person-adjusting-thermostatHave you ever gone to get your car fixed convinced that your vehicle is struggling with one issue only to find the source of the problem is completely different? This is common in the HVAC industry too! No, not because we can diagnose issues with your car but because we often see homeowners convinced something is wrong with their AC system when the problem is actually with their thermostat.

Your thermostat is the system that tells your air conditioner what to do. Without a working thermostat, your cooling system is going to end up with the wrong marching orders, or no orders at all. That is why we want you to know that we can help you figure out if the issue lies with your thermostat and choose the best course of action to get things back on track.

Do You Have Thermostat Trouble?

If your thermostat is on the fritz, you may want help from an HVAC contractor in La Plata, NM. Here are some ways to tell your thermostat is causing problems for your home comfort.

  • Your HVAC system isn’t responding. If you turn on your thermostat and set a certain temperature but nothing happens, it may be because the connection between your thermostat and your AC has been cut off. Of course, this is something that requires a fix sooner than later.
  • Your system doesn’t respond to changed settings. Let’s say you are trying to turn up the temperature setting on your thermostat to reduce the amount of energy you are using but when you go to adjust it, your thermostat doesn’t respond. This is a sign of a problem in your system.
  • Your HVAC short cycles or has overly-long cycles. If your thermostat isn’t picking up on the temperature in the home correctly it will impact how your air conditioner functions. It may short cycle because the thermostat is stuck reading a temperature lower than what the house is actually at; on the other hand it may force the AC to run longer because it can’t sense the cooler indoor climate.
  • The home temperature is never comfortable. This could be due to your thermostat improperly reading the temperature in the home or it may be due to a thermostat that is in a bad area (i.e. reads higher temperatures because it gets direct sunlight).
